Jay Brown Presents
The Best of Our Songwriter/Performers

Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show affirms that Jay Brown is “the most authentic songster to come out of the Carolina High Country since a man named Doc Watson”.

A singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, he has hundreds of classic songs in his repertoire as well as a hundred-odd originals. He performs with Boone-based roots band The Lazybirds, Indian-flavored world music group Shantavaani and early-jazz cats Swing Guitars. In 2007 he founded The Jay Brown One-Man-Band, in which the sole member handles vocals, guitar, harmonica, percussion and piano. The busy musician can be found gigging in clubs and pubs around Asheville and Western North Carolina, but has performed and studied in locales around the world, including New Orleans, California, India, Ghana, and Peru.

Jefree Vay has been playing guitar and writing songs for more than a quarter century. Born in the autumn foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, his earliest influences came from the traditional roots music of the area. Having later traveled the world exploring music and culture, Vay learned that “We all have a little of each other’s music in us.”

Vay’s musical background is eclectic ranging from front porch song circles as a child, led by his father, a spirited banjo picker; to singing evening mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome with The Berea College Concert Choir.

Vay has lived in Thailand for a couple of years where he delved into Thai folk dance and music. He spent a winter in Japan studying traditional Japanese Bunraku puppetry with the Tonda Puppet Troup. Sat zazen at the foot of their samisen masters and received instruction on the instrument that he relates to as “a really cool distant cousin of the banjo.”

Jefree Vay continues to journey, but presently calls The Blue Ridge Mountains home. There he works in hospice, caring for people who are ending their life’s journey. Finally, after all these years of travels and “catching songs from beyond” he is working on a proper album under the guidance of Chris Rosser at his Hollow Reed Studio in Asheville NC. Some amazing musicians including River Guerguerian, Aditi and Jay, Jake Wolf, and Eben Mann are joining him to help actualize his vision of sharing his songs with as many souls as possible.
