Any given style of music survives only if dedicated performers and teachers pass the torch to succeeding generations. Violinist Christian Howes and pianist Michael Jefry Stevens are both world class performers with a passion for teaching, and they’ll be collaborating during the second week of July at Howes’ Asheville String Intensive Workshop, a boot camp for advanced players and teachers wishing to sharpen their skills.

On Thursday, July 12 at 7:30 p.m. Howe and Stevens will perform with Workshop participants at the White Horse Black Mountain, giving all the players a chance to display their ensemble and improvisational chops in a jazz based environment.

An internationally acclaimed jazz violinist, Columbus, Ohio native Christian Howe commands a wide range of styles. Equally dedicated to teaching, Howes was a longtime faculty member at the prestigious Berklee School of Music (rising young Asheville fiddler Duncan Wickel was student) and has founded an online curriculum, the Creative Strings Academy. His string workshops are eagerly attended by musicians in the U.S. and Europe. Howes regularly places high in jazz critics’ polls, and has recorded three acclaimed albums on Resonance Records, each exploring a different facet of his musical interests.

Frequent White Horse headliner Michael Jefry Stevens has been associated with some of the most important figures in modern jazz over the past forty years, and is a celebrated soloist and composer in his own right. He’s written over 320 works for configurations ranging ranging from solo instrumentals, string quartet, to small jazz combos and big bands. His recorded output dates to 1991, and many more releases have followed. This fall he’ll join the music faculty of East Tennessee University.

Stevens is looking forward to his collaboration with Howes and his students. “This is a wonderful experience for me”, he says.”Christian is a true master and his students are quite brilliant!”
