This Trio will be presenting an eclectic selection of music for you this evening.

The royal title Vicious Queen and Her Boys might conjure visions of pillaging hordes, but in this case the invasion is benign and musical. The Wednesday Jazz series at the White Horse Black Mountain will showcase the eclectic repertoire of the Queen’s self-described “real live music for your ears”.

The Vicious Queen herself is vocalist Mary Steinbrecher, and the Boys are drummer Will Younts and acoustic bassist Garron Chesson. The trio will present selections that include, but are not limited to, jazz, free improvisation, ballads, contemporary songs and show tunes. The band observes that “All these songs are charged with political meaning based on all of our individual experiences and the state of our country and world.”

“One of our specific aims for this performance and group is to develop an extreme musical honesty in our improvisation that has little to do with Bebop and much more to do with our hearts and minds. One of our mentors once said that in improvisation, sometimes you should feel absolutely embarrassed. Another taught us that in one of his former music-making communities, women held distinct leadership roles because of their being wildly outnumbered by men. They were called vicious queens. We hope you join us for this night of honesty and kindness in music.”
