The event was well reviewed, and a great success, enjoyed by all who came. This has led to Julie and her 2 bands being picked up for a second CD Release Concert tonight.

The songs range from the "outside" to the "well known"...all compelling jazz pieces brilliantly performed by Julie and her 2 bands, with exciting and new arrangements by Michael Jefry Stevens, Bill Gerhardt, and Bryan McConnell. Julie McConnell has studied and performed music extensively since age 10, starting with gospel and classical music in her church choir in Greensboro, North Carolina. She went on to win numerous awards in piano and voice throughout Junior High and High School, both at local and state levels. She was awarded a Vocal Performance Scholarship to Appalachian State University in 1984. While at university, Julie was already performing gospel and bluegrass professionally, and had her first professional classical gig by age 19, performing the alto solos for the Bach Magnificat at the Summer Bach Festival held at Isothermal Community College, celebrating the 300th anniversary of the composer's birth.

"Julie McConnell has it all. She has beauty, a dazzling personality, AND SHE CAN SING. Her technique is direct and her intonation is impeccable. She sings all the songs in the right keys, without the interruptive influence of
improvisations. Her voice is very polished. She directs the movement of the group with her gentle but extremely melodic dynamic style. She could reach heights of such acclaim as Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Natalie Cole and others."
~Ace Hill, pianist, Monterey, CA

"Bryan McConnell, bassist, takes on the Herculean task of ryhthmic pulse, providing harmonic support and major soloist. He excels at all three duties, and most importantly, never seems to struggle with the responsibility or call attention to its difficulty or overcompensate. Don’t try that at home folks, this guy is a trained professional. He plays with a sure-footed strength and maturity that belie his relative youth. Bryan’s woody tone, deep and rich, support the vocals in contrapuntal fashion, like delicate beadwork, woven seamlessly."
~Bruce Forman, guitarist, Monterey, CA

Julie moved to Southern California in 1988, and she continued to perform professionally with the San Diego Master Chorale, The La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, and The Palomar Chamber Singers, during which time, she continued her collegiate studies at the University of California at San Marcos, 1998-2000, 2012-2013, and again 2017-2018 long distance.

In the late 1990’s Julie began singing jazz and showtunes professionally. Julie has a unique approach to the jazz standard; rooted in the foundation of her Southern musical upbringing, with the vocal technique of Barbra Streisand, the youthful sound of Norah Jones, and the soulfulness of Patsy Cline.

Julie flowered into a highly sought out jazz vocalist in Southern California, and performed with many San Diego musicians such as Shep Meyers, Steve O’Connor, Joe Marillo, Pat Danna, Flip Oakes, Duncan Moore, Russell Bizzett, Kevin Green, Sky Ladd, Mikole Kaar, Bob Campbell, Tim McMahon, Trip Sprague, Tommy Gannon, John Opferkoch, Nathan Souders, Bob Boss, and Bryan McConnell, among others.

Julie released her debut CD, Love Is Here, in 2004. This CD features Julie singing standards arranged by Bryan McConnell. It is an eclectic mix of songs performed with an original, smooth, and lasting sound. She has also recorded vocals for many other recording artists in both Northern and Southern California, as well as Jacksonville, Florida.

Bryan and Julie McConnell have the combined experience of 75 years as musicians,
and over 57 years as music educators.

They both work as performers, recording artists, conductors, educators, facilitators, and coordinators.

The dedication and quality they bring to their music is beyond compare.
