"Alan researches historical and contemporary events that catch his interest with great depth and attention to detail. He then writes wonderful
story songs with such diverse topics as endangered species of Sea Eagles to the loneliness of the life of The Last Lighthouse Keeper and
a whole album’s worth of songs about John Paul Jones.
Rob provides beautiful guitar backing (and forwarding!) on guitar which he jokingly referred to as his high strung wife. To continue this
image, he stroked her with gentle passion eliciting sighing harmonies and driving rhythms as the mood warranted. He sings in an intrinsically
British traditional style delivering songs with heartfelt sincerity."

Alan was a vital member of of the world's most influential celtic bands, The  Battlefield Band from its inception in 1969 till his departure in 2010.  In that time he toured all over the world and made almost 30 recordings with the band, working with such artists as Garrison Keillor, Van Morrison and Mike Oldfield. The band won awards in Germany, Britain and the U.S. and throughout Alan was at the heart, his keyboards underpinning the bagpipes and the fiddle.

Alan was the first to use keyboards as an integral part of a traditional folk band and the depth of his melodic playing and punctuated rhythms have so defined Celtic music that his, and Battlefield Band's influence can be heard in many of today's younger generation of Celtic musicians.   Alan is also a gifted singer and songwriter. His solo and harmony singing have been to the fore throughout Battlefield Band's history. His songs have been a feature of the band's repertoire since the early 80's and have been noted for their story telling element, lyricism and their strong melody.

Rob van Sante worked with Battlefield Band for 13 years as sound engineer for both live and recorded work. He was commonly acknowledged as their fifth member. In 2010 he left the band to concentrate on playing and recording in the duo with Alan.

Rob has appeared on many other albums displaying his virtuoso vocal ability both as a lead and harmony singer,  while showcasing his instrumental skills. These strands all combine to make a perfect complement to Alan in the duo.
