Guitarist extraordinaire ZuZu Welsh and band are no strangers to the White Horse Black Mountain, but the New Year sees some new faces in the lineup. Guitarist/vocalist Mark Kadowaki adds his fresh energy and attitude to the tight sound of longtime core members Johnny Haisman (drums) and Dana Koone (drums) at the Zuzu Welsh Band’s first White Horse appearance of 2017 on Saturday, January 7 at 8 p.m.

Welsh has been immersed in music since his ’70s childhood, tackling everything from mountain music to classic rock and just about every other style of American popular music along the way. The virtuoso guitarist has performed with artists as diverse as Chuck Berry, BB King, Dulcimer Dan, and BJ Leiderman. Most of the original material performed by the band is composed by Welsh, but the musicians bring the same care to delivering well-chosen cover songs. The group’s newest CD, Fault Line, presents ten new originals songs that range from blues to rock, with a ballad tossed in for good measure.

The Zuzu Welsh Band is comprised of Dana Koone on drums, percussion and vocals; Johnny Haisman on bass; Mark Kadowaki on guitar and vocals;and Zuzu Welsh on electric and acoustic guitars and vocals. In addition, from time to time Jen Wo joins us. Her angelic voice can be heard all over both The Road Less Traveled and Fault Line, lending harmonies and occasional leads to the songs I wrote. Together the band has over 60 years of experience playing original and classic rock, blues and country music in front of audiences of all sizes. Zuzu Welsh has been playing guitar since the 1970s, performing in a variety of bands doing everything from traditional mountain music to hard-edged rock and roll, with artists as diverse as Dulcimer Dan, Harlequin Jones, Avatar, The Edible Wild, Coyote, Reality In Exile, Jigawatt, SouledOut, Southern Express, Saturday In The Park, The Zoodles, and now with his own band. He also has guested with the likes of Chuck Berry, BB King, BJ Leiderman and Jeff Thompson. Most of the original material the band does was written by Zuzu, and can be heard on The Road Less Traveled and Fault Line, both available here on our website and at other online outlets. Johnny Haisman plays bass from a background in hardcore metal music. He confesses to an unusual fascination with aliens. He has been playing the guitar and bass for longer than he can remember, as he attributes his mad skills on stringed instruments to a long-ago interaction with aliens who taught him to play.
Dana Koone has been playing drums for 9 years, in a variety of bands performing Americana, rock and blues. Dana also served in our armed forces as a member of the United States Marine Corp, in Iceland, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. He plays traditional kit as well as cajon and djembe.

Mark comes to the band after locating to the Asheville area from Chicago. He started playing trombone in school band in 3rd grade., and has been playing guitar for over 40 years. Originally from Chicago where he was heavily influenced by the local blues scene. Still haven't decided between the Beatles and the Stones. Influenced by the blues and rhythm and blues of Chicago's vibrant music scene, he brings a new perspective to the band and our sound.

Jen Wo has performed all over, and was the pleasing female voice all over The Road Less Traveled. While she does not appear at every show, she brings passion, fashion and flair to the stage whenever she joins us.
Together, the band brings a tight solid sound to the stage with a keen ear towards adjusting to what the audience is enjoying, while presenting the mixture of cover and original material. With top-notch musicianship, well-crafted originals and a collection of cover tunes you are sure to enjoy, the band’s primary goal is for the audience to have a great time.
