ROY BOOK BINDER and DOUG MACLEOD Appearing Fri Sept 8th 2017 at 8pm

45 Years on The Road as a Performer.....Acoustic Blues Veteran Roy Book Binder is Definitely Doing Something Right.

$12 in advance/ $15 at the door
Roy Book Binder is an American treasure; an accomplished blues guitarist, singer songwriter and storyteller.

Roy Book Binder has been rambling around the world for the past 45 years! He gave up his Greenwich Village "pad" in the early 70's and lived in his "Tour Bus" for the next 15 years criss crossing the US and appearing at festivals throughout Canada & Europe.
Book Binder, travelled with the legendary Rev. Gary Davis in the late 60's.

This is probably the best way to hear master finger picker Roy Book Binder-in a live performance, with his reminiscences and stories linking all of the individual songs together into a single cohesive set piece. Between and even within some of the songs, we hear amusing anecdotes about some of his personal and professional relationships-with his mentor, Rev. Gary Davis, with Carolina bluesman, Pink Anderson, and with his friend and colleague, Jorma Kaukonen (who also plays guitar on a few tracks). His repertoire here concentrates on covers of his favorite pre-war pickers, with a heavy emphasis on Rev. Gary Davis, plus several originals that are firmly within that tradition. Book Binder is one of the finest blues finger pickers active today.   ---  BLUES REVIEW

The Book, recorded his first solo acoustic Blues album in the 70's, which was the first to receive 5 stars in DOWNBEAT magazine! In the late 80's 'The Book' was part of Bonnie Raitt's East Coast Tour, which included an appearance on The Grand Old Opry which led to almost 30 appearances on NASHVILLE NOW's, Ralph Emory Show! In the 90's he often appeared with JORMA KAUKONEN (who recorded 2 of Roy's songs)

He has been described as a guitar pickin' hillbilly bluesman, and has released 12 albums. He has performed at most major blues and folk festivals in the U.S. and Europe, including Merlefest. Notables that have shared the stage with Binder include Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, John Jackson, Sonny Terry, Doc Watson, Ray Charles, and Brownie McGhee.

A student of both Pink Anderson and Gary Davis, Book Binder is one of the few revivalists whose mastery of the elegant East Coast blues style transcends the technical to embrace the form's vision. As always, the program leans heavily on interpretations of classic material from the genre, including tunes by Bayless Rose, Gary Davis, and Willie McTell; also included are bows to country and western pioneer Jimmie Rodgers (He's In The Jailhouse Now) and the Delta's master of double-entendre, Bo Carder (Let's Get Drunk Again).”   --- LIVING BLUES

"Doug MacLeod is an acoustic roots master. He has been using guitars and voice to create his own unique musical vision for over fifty years...  - Elwood Blues aka  Dan Aykroyd".

Like the old masters who taught him, MacLeod's music expresses life and times through an intangible, elusive quality that may simply be a keen sense of what matters most. Doug’s music, stories, and philosophy provide a healing that has helped others overcome the hardships of their lives.

Doug subscribes to the philosophies he learned from country bluesman Ernest Banks of Toano, VA. "Never play a note you don't believe” and "Never write or sing about what you don't know about.”

MacLeod is known for his superb songwriting, guitar wizardry, warm soulful vocals, wit and unforgettable live performances. At the heart of a Doug MacLeod performance is his knack for storytelling, bringing characters-from the faceless to the legendary-to strikingly real life.

Doug is a multiple Blues Music Award winner, most recently the 2017 Blues Music Award for Acoustic Artist Of The Year and the Blues Blast Music Award for Male Artist Of The Year.

He is an international touring artist who writes and sings original songs that are based on his own life and experiences. He learned from the old masters and carries forward a valuable tradition.

As a youth Doug overcame abuse and a crippling stutter by turning to music. After picking up a guitar, and singing - he found his voice.

MacLeod's playing landed him sideman gigs with George 'Harmonica' Smith, Big Joe Turner, Pee Wee Crayton, Eddie 'Cleanhead' Vinson, Lowell Fulson and Big Mama Thornton. Over 30 years, 21 studio albums, several live records, compilations, a blues guitar instructional DVD and a live performance DVD, MacLeod has consistently earned raves. His songs have been covered by many artists including Albert King, Albert Collins, Joe Louis Walker and Eva Cassidy. MacLeod's songs have been featured in many TV movies and the hit show In the Heat of the Night. August Wilson requested his soulful slide guitar playing in the Los Angeles opening of "Gem of the Ocean".

Doug MacLeod’s newest release, ‘Break The Chain’, is quite possibly his strongest release to date, which speaks volumes.

Each song extremely personal and at the same time, universal; covering subjects topical, humorous, and soulful; from the satirical to the sublime.

The title song, ‘Break The Chain’, which was co-written and performed with his son Jesse. The song focuses on breaking the cycle of family violence and abuse, Doug and Jesse confront this pervasive issue directly. Together, they share the healing, reconciliation and peace available to all who work to prevent the cycle and Break The Chain.

"Like all great blues men, MacLeod lives his music, and the songs are not just on the tips of his fingers and tongue, they are one with his being.”
