UNC-A pays tribute to EMC Records

May 22 at 7:30 pm

Dr. Bill Bares has created an ensemble (the ECM ensemble) populated by excellent players from UNC-Asheville.  Their music represents an amalgam of the sounds of ECM in a most accessible and tantalizing way.

ECM is perhaps Europe's most  important jazz/world music label.  Top artists such as Pat Metheny, Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Keith Jarret and Don Cherry have all recorded for ECM.  Equally as important, ECM has been instrumental in bringing to the public music (jazz and other) from all over Europe and beyond featuring artists a huge diversity of musical traditions, frequently in groupings with others from different countries and cultures.

The music blends traditional jazz ensemble with unconventional forms, instruments and grooves.  Joining Dr. Bares in the band are Ray Damron (trumpet), Ian Boyer (reeds), Matthew Mannin (guitar), Clayton Gibb (guitar), Ben Mercer (bass), Chris Simmons (drums) and Annie Jo Buchanan (guest vocal).
White Horse Black Mountain (105 Montreat Rd.) is a 215-seat music and arts venue that has staged more than 2,500 concerts and other events during its 10-year history. It offers state-of-the-art sound, cabaret-style (table) seating, and bar/concession area that serves beer, wine, Kombucha, soft drinks and snacks.
