Roberta Baum’s bohemian rapture is rooted in honoring the legacy of jazz nobility, as in
Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Carter and Abbey Lincoln. In addition, Roberta brings a stunning free jazz arsenal from her days with Ornette Coleman. Her interpretations of jazz standards swing full and wide, gravitating from lush to feral and sensual to sublime.
Roberta will be joined by the esteemed Dr. Bill Bares on piano, Zack Page on upright bass and Evan Martin on drums. Join us for a captivating evening of “Jazz Spells“ at The White Horse in Black Mountain on Wed. Oct. 9th at 7:30 pm.

NYC transplant, Roberta Baum is a graduate of The High School of Performing Arts.
She performed on Broadway in “GODSPELL“, The WHO’s rock opera “TOMMY“ and “HAIR“.
As fate would have it, hearing the creative genius of Betty Carter ignited her talent for singing jazz. Fronting bands of her own with esteemed musicians such as Fred Hersch, Kenny Barron and Anthony Davis, where she was discovered and taken under wing by legendary jazz master Ornette Coleman. Coleman produced, recorded and arranged Roberta’s original music for her concert debut at The Public Theater New Music Series in 1980.

Roberta Baum is a grant recipient from The National Endowment of the Arts and Meet The Composer.  She has recorded six CD under the name of Serpentine Arborvitae. Critically acclaimed for her fearless and provocative musical exploration of feminine archetypes, ancient women’s mysteries and sacred traditions. Her CD “ ROCK THE GODDESS “ was selected as soundtrack for Lifetime Television’s Intimate Portrait Series “ WITCHES” narrated by Anjelica Huston.
